No One Knows Who Created the Very First Pizza.

Bread was said to have originated in prehistoric times, and was considered the first form of prepared food. But much can be inferred on the true historical beginnings of who invented pizza. There seems to be a question on whether the ancient Greeks or the Egyptians invented this delicious food. This is because during earlier times, some say that these people were seen to have eaten a pizza-like food.

Still, the question on who invented pizza for the first time ever is still shrouded in mystery up to now.

The City of Naples Became the Starting Point of Further Developments.

Nevertheless, there are certain accounts that Naples is considered as the birthplace of a more modern-day pizza. Their earlier version was called focaccia and was a simple concoction of flat circles of dough with minimal ingredients. This flattened dough was baked to perfection and sprinkled with various herbs and spices.

Their simple recipe, famous with peasants during that time, has been the focal point that brought about the other developments of pizza recipes.

The First Pizza Parlors Worldwide Brought Pizza to More People.

In 1738, still in the city of Naples, the first pizza parlor or pizzeria was born. This was named as Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba. How they prepare their pizza dishes is really interesting. They use an oven which uses lava from Mount Vesuvius to cook their pizzas.

In 1889, another tavern in Naples, owned by by Don Raffaele Esposito, added more ingredients to the first recipe of pizza when they were visited by the Queen Margherita Teresa Giovanni and King Umberto I. To be specific, they made the dish more special by adding basil and mozzarella cheese. This was called Margherita Pizza in honor of the Queen.

America Opens its Doors to this Popular Dish.

Thanks to the Italian immigrants, who traveled to the US, pizza had found its way to the US. Because of this, the Italians helped increase the popularity of this dish not only in Italy but also in America.

That is why, it wasn’t entirely surprising that in 1905, the first pizzeria was established at 53 1/3 Spring Street, New York. This licensed store was named as Lombardi’s Pizzeria Napoletana and was owned by Gennaro Lombardi.

In the 1930s, the first “Pizza Hut” chain of restaurants was put up in the US.

Other Interesting Facts About Pizza.

Years before, pizza was always taken in hot and fresh. While that is still being done in most pizza parlors worldwide, the need for a quick frozen pizza as a ready-to-cook item at home also became a necessity for those who like eating pizza at home. That is why Rose Totino invented the frozen pizza, and it continues to be a hit today.

And another interesting wise invention that’s worth mentioning is the invention of Carmela Vitale of Dix Hills, New York. Vitale’s invention is used to keep the covers of the pizza box from hitting the pizza. This is the white, circular thing that can be found inside the pizza boxes.

And so it goes… Many still do not really know who invented pizza. But not everyone may probably want to really dig history in order to find that out. Still, with all this mystery, pizza still continues to be a bestselling item to those who drop by the pizzerias or those who order or make their own pizzas at home.
